Katayama Masao ( Japanese 片 山 正 夫 ; born September 11, 1877 , Okayama Prefecture , † June 11, 1961 ) was a Japanese physical chemist .

Katayama was a student of Sakurai Jōji at the University of Tokyo , one of the first chemistry professors in Tokyo (from 1882), who had studied under Alexander William Williamson at University College London and who became a staunch advocate of atomic theory and who pursued a program in measuring methods in experimental physics to apply chemistry to the study of the vibrations and dynamics of molecules. Katayama went after graduating in 1900 for further studies at the University of Zurich to Richard Lorenz and from 1905 to 1909 at the Humboldt University of Berlin to Walther Nernst and Max Bodenstein . In 1911 Katayama became the first professor of physical chemistry at Tōhoku University and in 1919 Sakurai's successor as professor of physical chemistry in Tokyo.

In 1914 he published a textbook on physical chemistry that was influential in Japan. He mainly dealt with surface and colloid chemistry. In 1916 he published an equation named after him about the relationship between surface tension and temperature in a liquid.

His successor as Professor Mizushima San'ichirō is one of his students .
