Design engineer EFZ
The design engineer EFZ ( French Dessinateur-constructeur industriel CFC , Italian Progettista meccanico AFC ) is a basic vocational training in Switzerland .
The training lasts four years and takes place simultaneously in the training company , in the vocational school and in inter-company courses .
The design engineer EFZ has replaced the professions of machine draftsman and technical draftsman since 1998 .
The design engineer EFZ mainly uses CAD systems during his training , but also learns the essential "manual" skills of technical drawing .
job profile
EFZ designers work with engineers and technicians to design individual parts and assemblies for devices, machines or systems as well as tools and devices for production. The designers develop production, assembly and test documents and production data. They write appropriate instructions and documentation for the use and maintenance of the products . A large part of their labor is dedicated to the formal production, the design work resulting from their own and that of the engineer-designers, in the form of technical drawings .
Recommended previous education
We recommend:
- completed elementary school
- middle to upper school level
- good grades in mathematics and physics
Course of training
In parallel to the in-house training on the CAD system, the vocational school is attended and four inter-company courses are completed in the first year of training, which are part of the basic training in the first year of training.
Vocational school
The vocational school is attended two days a week in the first and second year of apprenticeship, from the third only once a week. If the vocational baccalaureate is acquired at the same time , lessons take place two days a week. Subjects are:

Inter-company courses
In addition to training in the training company and at the vocational school, the EFZ designer learns the basic skills in the following inter-company courses:
- Drawing technique (16 days)
- Design technique (15 days)
- Construction methodology (14 days)
- Production technology (9 days)
Some of the inter-company courses can (depending on the training company) be completed internally in the training workshops or construction departments, if the necessary requirements of Swissmem vocational training are met.
