Puig de Massanella

The Puig de Massanella ( Pico de Masanella in Castilian ) is the second highest mountain on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca at 1,364.184 meters . It belongs to the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and to the municipality of Escorca .

The Puig de Massanella is the second highest freely accessible mountain in Mallorca, after the Penyal des Migdia, a secondary peak of the Puig Major at 1398 m. The 1445 m high main peak of the Puig Major itself is not freely accessible as it is located in a military area. The Puig de Massanella is occasionally snowed in in winter.

Tourist development

The ascent of the Puig de Massanella takes place from the parking lot at the Pass Coll de sa Bataia . For the mountain tour, the private owner of the Comafreda farm charges a small admission fee, for whose purpose a guard is hired. About 92% of the area of the Tramuntana Mountains are privately owned.

In the area over 1000 meters, both summit trails are poorly marked with cairns and color markings and therefore require a good sense of direction and mountaineering experience. For this reason and because of the risk of falling in the area of the summit plateau, climbing is not recommended in bad weather.

The 7th stage of the Majorcan long-distance hiking trail GR 221 leads from Tossals Verds to Son Amer over the Massanella massif. This path, from Font des Prat over the Puig de ses Bassetes and the Coll de ses Cases de sa Neu (Pass of the Snow Houses ), is excellently marked and accessible without fees.

Just like the GR 222 (Ruta d'Artà a Lluc), the 6th and 7th stages of the GR 221, from Sóller to the Santuari de Lluc , are also considered a pilgrimage route because of the destination Lluc .
