Master Cheng in Pohjanjoki is a fiction film by Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki from 2019. The film opened in German cinemas on July 30, 2020.
content
After the death of his wife, the Chinese chef Cheng travels with his son to the Finnish village of Pohjanjoki to meet his benefactor Fongtron . This Fongtron is unknown there. Later it turns out that it is the late Strömberg.
When a busload of Chinese tourists stranded in the village, he helps the takeaway operator Sirkka to adequately cater for the travelers. In the kitchen he prepares sushi with simple means . The tourists like it and Sirkka makes the profit of her life.
Sirkka's regulars also try the unfamiliar fare. Cheng explains to them that Chinese food can make you happy and healthy. And indeed: It helps with digestive and menstrual problems . The locals introduce Cheng to Finnish idiosyncrasies: partying on the lake, sauna and tango dancing .
A love relationship develops between Cheng and Sirkka and they get married.
