The Mata Taua Peak is a striking, 3,013 m high mountain in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Royal Society Range, it rises from a ridge between the Matataua and Ferrigno glaciers .
The mountain offers good views of an area of numerous rocky peaks to the northeast, as well as Rampart Ridge and the Upper Staircase glacier to the southwest. The New Zealand Geographic Board prompted this in 1994 to name it after a term from the Māori , which translated means something like " scout ".
