The Matataua Glacier (from Maori Mata Taua for scouts , scouts , scouts , formerly Marchant Glacier ) is an 11 km long glacier in East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Royal Society Range, it flows from the slopes of Rampart Ridge between Bishop Peak and Mount Potter in a north-westerly direction in the vicinity of Mount Bockheim .

The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him after David R. Marchant in 1994 . Marchant was a glacial geologist at the University of Maine and from 1995 at Boston University . From 1985 he researched palaeoclimatic changes and geological stability in the area of the Antarctic dry valleys on the basis of the composition of the volcanic ash and uncovered the glacier history of the East Antarctic ice sheet .

In September 2018, the United States Board on Geographic Names, in coordination with the New Zealand Geographic Board, announced the renaming of the glacier. The reason for this is that the original namesake sexually harassed a doctoral student during research in Antarctica and therefore no longer meets the requirements for a namesake. A namesake must have promoted the progress of polar research, but Marchant prevented progress through his behavior. The new name of the glacier is based on the neighboring Mata Taua Peak .
