The Matakitaki River is a river in the north of the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Matakitaki River is a tributary to the upper reaches of the Buller River . It is formed from two rivers in the Spenser Mountains , north of the Lewis Pass , the West Branch Matakitaki River and East Branch Matakitaki River and flows into the Buller River after 65 km at Murchison . The river first flows north, then turns west, later again north. Shortly afterwards he reached the scattered settlement of Matakitaki , later Six Mile and then Murchison. With the exception of the two settlements, the river basin is almost uninhabited: A side road leads from Murchison up the valley to Matikati, another road connects Maakitaki with Burnbrae on State Highway 65 in the west, which runs roughly parallel .

The Matakitaki River has a larger tributary with the Glenroy River .

use

The river is used for white water rafting in two sections. The energy supplier Network Tasman was planning to build a 30 MW hydropower plant on the upper reaches, but discontinued planning in 2012 due to economic imponderables and sold the land intended for the project in 2013.
