Mateo Crawley-Boevey SS.CC. (* November 18, 1875 Arequipa , Peru ; † May 4, 1960 in Valparaíso , Chile ), called Padre Mateo, was a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Picpus Society, Arnstein Fathers) and Apostle of the Ascension of the Sacred Heart .

Life

The son of an English nobleman and convert and a Peruvian woman felt a vocation as a priest at an early age and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary as a novice at the age of 15 . On February 2, 1891 he was given the habit and the name Frater Joseph-Stanislaus. This was later changed to the name Frater Matthias, but he was always called Padre Mateo , the Spanish form of Matthew. This first name was also used by his biographers. On April 2, 1897, he received the ordination of the deacon and from then on preached on the veneration of the Sacred Heart . On December 17th he was ordained a priest . In 1903 he was one of the founders of a law faculty in Valparaiso that later became part of that city's Pontifical University .

In 1907, after a pilgrimage to the Sacred Heart Shrine Paray-le-Monial , he decided to set up an Apostolate of the Sacred Heart for families. For this he received the express commission of Pope Pius X. This apostolate essentially consisted of enthroning the Heart of Jesus in the family houses, i.e. That is, an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus should have a prominent place for worship (similar to a corner of God ) and this worship should be exercised by all family members. The religious meaning was that Jesus should form the middle of the family, so to speak "rule" in it. The Feast of Christ the King has a similar concern . Mateo found the commission to ascend the throne of the Heart of Jesus in the visions of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque .

For this apostolate, Fr. Mateo set up secretariats to print brochures, leaflets and pictures. The press organ was called El Primer Viernes (The First Friday). The active participation of lay people, mostly young women, was new. After three years, 120,000 enthronements had already been carried out. This apostolate soon extended to other countries in South America and finally to Europe, North America and Asia. From 1908 to 1914 Fr. Mateo traveled to South America, then Europe and from 1935 to 1940 Asia, where he held popular missions and priestly retreats. From October 1940 to 1946 he worked in the United States and Canada . In 1932, 25 years after this apostolate began, the number of families enthroned in the Sacred Heart was estimated to be tens of millions. The 50th anniversary in 1957 was celebrated by Pope Pius XII. granted uninterrupted triduums of Holy Masses (160 in total) celebrated in Paray le Monial.

His apostolate was expressly given by Popes Benedict XV. , Pius XI. and Pius XII. supported and recommended. Pope Paul VI called Father Mateo the "modern apostle of the heart of Jesus".

Mateo's health deteriorated from 1947 onwards, so that he could be less and less active. He returned to Valparaíso in 1956, very ill, and died on May 4, 1960. His grave is in the local church of the Congregation.
