Mateo Gucci (Polish: Mateusz Gucci * around 1500 probably in Florence ; † around 1550 probably in Krakow ) was an architect , sculptor and stonemason of the Renaissance . Gucci belonged to the third generation of Italian Renaissance artists who worked at the Kraków royal court.

Life

Mateo Gucci was born in or around Florence around 1500. He came to Krakow at the behest of King Sigismund the Elder , where he worked at the Wawel Castle . The Jewish community in Kazimierz commissioned him to renovate the originally Gothic Old Synagogue in the Renaissance style, which he completed before 1550. Mateo Gucci was probably related to another Florentine architect and artist in Krakow, Santi Gucci , who was about 30 years younger and was already working in the Mannerist style. Partly it is believed that both were brothers. However, the quite large age difference speaks against this. Guccio Gucci , the founder of the Gucci brand is said to have referred to being descended from Mateo Gucci.
