Mateo de la Mata Ponce de León

Mateo de la Mata y Ponce de León (* before 1650 in Requena near Valencia , Spain ; † November 16, 1720 in Lima , Peru) was a Spanish lawyer who served temporarily as Viceroy of Peru in 1716 .

Life

Mateo de la Mata came from a family of the lower Spanish nobility. He studied law at the University of Alcalá , the University of Salamanca and the University of Osuna . He was a knight in the Order of Calatrava .

His career in South America began in 1674 as an oidor at the Real Audiencia of Santa Fé de Bogotá . In 1680 he was transferred to Lima as a criminal judge ( Alcalde del Crímen ) . There he married the local Luisa de Céspedes y Toledo. In early 1687 he was promoted to Oidor at the Real Audiencia in Lima .

In 1689 he was promoted to president of the Real Audiencia of Quito ; However, he did not take up this office until January 1691. During his tenure in Quito, the reconstruction of Guayaquil , which was largely destroyed by a pirate attack in 1687 , and the city center was relocated. In 1696 de la Mata supervised the construction work on site. During his time in what is now Ecuador, other natural disasters occurred such as the earthquake in Latacunga (1692 and 1699 in the middle of the reconstruction phase ) or a plague epidemic in Quito in 1693.

He worked in Quito until 1699 when he returned to Lima as an oidor and lawyer. The court administration offered him a seat on the India Council for his services , but Mata refused and preferred to stay in Lima.

In 1716, the viceroy Diego Ladrón de Guevara was deposed surprisingly . As senior Oidor , Mata had to temporarily take over the official duties on March 2, 1716, which he handed back to his successor on August 15, to Diego Morcillo Rubio de Auñón , the Archbishop of Charcas .

Mata resumed his work at the Audiencia and died in Lima on November 16, 1720.
