The figure in the vineyards

The Mater dolorosa , also known as the statue of the pain of the Virgin Mary, is a figure of Mary on the Way of the Cross to the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten in Volkach .

history

The figure is larger than life and was created in 1712. An inscription in its base reads: "O all of you / you who pass by on the way / pay attention and see / whether a pain equals my pain" ( Klgl 1,12  EU ). After a year in the base, it was renovated in 1874. In 1962 A. Greiner had the figure renovated again.

During the last restoration in 1993, the year 1874 was removed from the base. On a metal plate in front of the figure is noted: "Anno 1993 Domini / E. Streck's workshop restored the Mater Dolorosa / on the generous commission of the / family Kirch". The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the figure as a monument under the number D-6-75-174-145.

description

The statue of Mary made of Franconian sandstone can be assigned to the baroque . Mary, lamenting her son's passion , sits on a stone block. The face is contorted with pain and directed towards the sky, the hands are clasped in prayer. A golden halo of wavy rays surrounds the head. The robe is wrinkled. A sword that pierces the chest - otherwise belonging to the pictorial type - is missing.
