The material cable car from the Fischunkelalm to the Röth is a former cable car in the Berchtesgaden Alps .

History and usage

In 1936, on the personal orders of the then Reichsjägermeister Hermann Göring, ibexes were to be released into the Berchtesgaden Alps. A material cable car was then built from the Fischunkelalm to the Wildtörl in Röth at an altitude of around 1500 meters. With the help of the material ropeway, a 15 hectare gate was built in the Röth, surrounded by a four to six meter high wire fence. The entire Röth was then a restricted area, in the Neuhüttenalm area a hunting lodge (Elisabeth Keimer Hut) was built for Göring as early as 1934 for 42,000 RM . This was torn down in the spring of 1949, the foundations are still there today.

For the reintroduction program first four ibex were - three goats and a buck - selected. The animals came from the Swiss wildlife park Peter and Paul near St. Gallen. They were rowed across the Königssee and then carried in boxes to the Obersee . Finally, the animals, still packed in the wooden boxes, were brought into the gate with the material cable car.

After the animals were abandoned in the gate, the material ropeway was still used to transport feed into the gate in winter and to take care of Göring's hunting lodge. Four hunters were responsible for running the cable car and looking after the animals. Later - again via the cable car - more ibexes were brought into the gate, including the two animals that were a gift from Benito Mussolini . In 1944 the population, which had grown to eight goats and 15 goats, was released into the wild.

Current condition

Remains of the mountain station on the Wildtörl

The cable car is in ruins. There are still some larch posts that were used as cable car masts. Remains of the former valley and mountain station can still be seen.
