The Matheon is a center for applied mathematics research based in Berlin . His focus is on the development of new methods for modeling , simulation and optimization of real processes in key technologies . The scientists at Matheon cooperate in interdisciplinary projects with partners from science and industry . Another focus is on collaboration with schools and activities for the general public.

Matheon is run by the mathematics institutes of the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), the Humboldt University of Berlin (HU Berlin) and the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) as well as the Konrad-Zuse-Center for Information Technology Berlin (ZIB) and the Weierstraß -Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS).

The institution was founded in 2002 as a DFG research center. The DFG funded them over a maximum period of twelve years in three periods with 5 to 6 million euros annually. In 2014 the Einstein Foundation Berlin took over the financing of the project. It provides around 2.5 million euros per year to the Einstein Center ECMath , in which Matheon is also involved. Further funds are raised through industrial projects, universities and public funding.

In October 2016, around 210 researchers were involved in Matheon projects.

Goal setting

The objective results from the philosophy formulated in 2002:

The main focus of research is the development of new methods for modeling, simulation and optimization of real processes in key technologies. In particular, mathematical methods from the areas of optimization and discrete mathematics , numerical analysis and scientific computing as well as applied analysis and stochastic analysis are used.

Research at Matheon is currently focused on the following areas of application:

One of the goals of the research center is to intensify the collaboration between mathematics and industry , society and technology development. Matheon is the point of contact for many branches of industry. Many projects are therefore carried out in close cooperation with industrial partners and specialist colleagues from other scientific disciplines.

Cooperations

Individual members as well as the participating institutions are involved in a number of regional, national and international collaborations . In addition, there are formal partnerships with internationally renowned research associations that are similarly organized and have related research focuses.

As of October 2016 there are cooperation agreements with:

  • "Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao"
  • "University of British Columbia in Vancouver"
  • "Applied Mathematics Institute of the 4 Technical Universities of the Netherlands"
  • "Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling of the Warsaw University"
  • "Center for Mathematical Modeling Universidad de Chile"

In addition to collaboration on the research level - if possible with the involvement of industrial partners - all cooperation agreements also include joint workshops , student exchanges and exchange visits by professors and young scientists.

The cooperation partners involved thus form a global network of centers of excellence with comparable organizational structures, in which globally recognized experts from almost all mathematical fields are united. Topics from industry and scientific application areas are dealt with in their respective regions, in which their respective scientific focus lies.

Educational mandate

In addition to the objectives in the field of research, Matheon also organizes various events for schoolchildren and the interested public. This includes:

  • The "Digital Advent Calendar" which provides a mathematical problem to be solved on the Internet every day from December 1st to December 24th. Launched in 2004, there is now also an English and a Dutch version, which are also very well received in these countries.
  • “MathInside”, a lecture program at Berlin's Urania, in which members of the center present the attractive aspects of applied mathematics on three dates per semester.
  • “The Matheathlon” has the motto: “Calculate continuously”. Schools and clubs can book this mixture of race and betting calculation free of charge. On a running distance of 400 or 800 meters there are stations with small math problems, for the correct solution of which time is credited. Around twenty schools and associations make use of this offer every year, including schools from abroad regularly - in 2015, for example, the German School in Nairobi (Kenya).
  • “What's Math got to do with it?”, In which Matheon members vividly report in short, sometimes funny videos about the application of mathematics in their research projects. For this purpose, tasks are developed that can be used in mathematics lessons.

In addition, the research center is involved - also in cooperation with the " German Center for Teacher Education Mathematics " (DZLM) - in the areas of teacher training and education, the promotion of talented students and the creation of teaching and learning materials.

Others

In 2007, the Matheon Research Center was selected as the location in the Land of Ideas .
