Mathias is a civil parish on the Lost River in Hardy County , West Virginia , USA . Mathias is located off West Virginia Route 259 at an elevation of 468 meters above sea level on the eastern edge of the state. The closest settlement is Basye-Bryce Mountain about ten kilometers southeast of Mathias. The nearest larger parishes are Broadway (18 miles south), Timberville (17 miles south) and New Market (30 miles southeast).
It is no longer possible to determine exactly when the area of today's settlement was first settled. The settler John Mathias sr. acquired a larger area of land in the current area of the settlement in 1791. In 1797, the John Mathias House, which has been preserved to this day and an extension was added in 1825, was built. Mathias was eventually replaced by John Mathias jr. Presumably founded between 1870 and 1880 and initially carried the name "the settlers of old Mathias" (Eng. "the settlers of old Mathias"), which was later shortened to the current name of the settlement. Later the first post office was opened in the settlement. In the meantime, John Mathias jr. and his brother Jacob Mathias the whole land of the settlement.
The John Mathias House was owned by the Mathias family until the 1970s.
Mathias has a bank , two restaurants, a post office, a community center and a gas station. The Lost River State Park is also located on the territory of the municipality.
The climate in Mathias is subtropical according to the Köppen-Geiger classification . Summers are hot and humid with an average temperature of 21.5 ° C in July, and winters are moderate with an average temperature of −1.3 ° C. The annual mean is 10.5 ° C. The average annual rainfall is 889 mm.
