Mathias Dewatripont

Mathias François Dewatripont (born December 27, 1959 in Brussels ) is a Belgian economist . In June 2014 he took over the post of Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Belgium .

Career, research and teaching

Dewatripont studied economics at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). After his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981 and Master of Arts in 1982 he went to the United States at the Harvard University . There he received his PhD in 1986, having returned to the Université libre as a researcher the year before. In 1988 he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an assistant professor , and from 1990 he was again a lecturer at the Université libre. In 1994 he was appointed full professor there.

In May 2011 Dewatripont was appointed Director of the National Bank of Belgium for a six-year term. At the same time, he took on other mandates and offices, for example he has been a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision since June 2011 , was at the European Banking Authority between June 2011 and December 2013 and from June 2011 to October 2013 initially as a deputy and later a full member of the European Supervisory authority for insurance and company pension schemes . He has been a member of the High Finance Council since March 2012 . When he took over the activities at the National Bank, he became an associate professor at the ULB. In 2005 he was chairman of the European Economic Association for one year .

The focus of Dewatripont's scientific work is on questions of contract theory and organizational behavior, particularly in the financial industry .

Dewatripont has received several awards for his work, including the 1998 Francqui Prize and the 2003 Yrjö Jahnsson Prize . In 2009 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
