Mathias Modica

Mathias Modica (born March 18, 1977 in Rome ) is a music producer, DJ, pianist and A&R . He and several employees run the record company Gomma Records , Kryptox (new forms of jazz, Kraut & Electronica) and the indie label Toy Tonics. Under the pseudonym Munk (until 2008 as a duo with Jonas Imbery) he has released four albums and various singles and EPs. As a composer and producer he worked for / with James Murphy , Die Sterne , Nancy Whang, Asia Argento, DJ Chloe, Bobby Conn, Rammellzee and others. He was executive producer for albums by WhoMadeWho , Peaches , Mocky , Headman and Box Codax, the side project of Nick McCarthy by Franz Ferdinand u. a.

Life

Grew up in Rome, Paris and Munich in an Italian-German family of musicians. The father Robert Maximilian Helmschrott is a composer of contemporary music. Modica learned piano, drums, bass, saxophone and church organ in her youth, was active in many music projects, has received various music sponsorship awards and is a professional collector of records. He studied piano at the Munich University of Music (dropped out) and worked for the private radio station Jazz Welle Plus in Munich. Between 1996 and 2007 he was active as a party organizer and club operator in Munich. Among others in the first league, Muffathalle , Praterinsel, ultrasound. He runs the Rubybar irregularly with Robinson Kuhlman and Robi Gränitz.

He founded the record label Gomma in 1999 together with Jonas Imbery (who left the company in 2012). Toy Tonics 2014 and Kryptox 2018. Modica and Gomma are also repeatedly involved in art projects and were responsible for the graphics magazine Amore as publishers. He is also active as an exhibition organizer: He ran the temporary Miao Gallery in Munich (June to December 2016). For Gomma he curated the Gomma Picture Shows four times together with Mirko Borsche and Thomas Kartsolis (Benetah in Stockholm 2003, Circle Culture gallery in Berlin 2006, Haus der Kunst “Festival of Independents” in Munich, Tokyo as part of “Heimat als Utopie”. Exhibition of the 032C magazine). Modica also works as a graphic artist and illustrator for the Gomma label and Kryptox and is responsible for the artwork together with Mirko Borsche and Thomas Kartsolis.

He was also involved in art projects with the likes of Nevin Adadag, Rammellzee , Martin Fengel and others. a. involved.
