Mathias Tanner

Mathias Tanner SJ (born February 28, 1630 in Pilsen , Bohemia , † February 8, 1692 in Prague ) was a Bohemian Catholic priest , theologian and religious historian. At times he was rector of the Charles University in Prague .

Life

At sixteen, Tanner entered the Society of Jesus on September 23, 1646 . After completing the usual studies, he lectured philosophy and theology (dogmatics and exegesis) in Prague for over ten years. There he was also rector Magnificus of the university from 1672 to 1675. From 1676-1679 and 1686-1689 he was Provincial of the Bohemian Province, which at that time required a lot of diplomatic skill. At this time there were negotiations with both Rome and Vienna regarding the right of bishops to censor the writings of the universities in Bohemia; a right that Tanner claimed for the Jesuit order . Tanner himself was often active as a censor, as library entries show.

He was also head of the religious house in Prague and the theological training.

With the Leipzig superintendent Elias Siegesmund Reinhard , Tanner delivered a violent polemic about the nature of transubstantiation and the necessity of celibacy , in which Abbot Vincenz Macarius Franck of the Premonstratensian monastery Strahov (in whose monastery Fromm later entered) was involved. The reason for this was the conversion of the Lutheran pastor and composer Andreas Fromm in 1668 with his whole family in the Jesuit church in Prague. In response, Tanner wrote the Dialogus conversisticus ; Reinhart answered this with the almost hundred-page letter "Reply to the Post": Elias Sigismund Reinhart's Der heiligen Schrifft Doctors, Professors, and Superintendentens In Leipzig Reply to the Post To Father Matthias Tannern from the JH S. As part of the Counter-Reformation, Tanner wrote other writings on the Eucharist ( Cruentum Christi sacrificium ). He also initiated the pilgrimage to the "Mount of Olives" near Štramberk (Kotouč u Štramberka).

Mathias Tanner died in Prague on February 8, 1692. Contemporaries described him as a man of ardent and attractive piety.

Significant are Tanner's biographical accounts of the order's history, which appeared in volumes magnificently decorated with illustrations. These representative writings are in Latin, while the writings on popular piety are partly also in German and Bohemian.
