He also published under the pseudonym Wilhelm Warnkönig .

Live and act

Bernhard Duhr was the son of tax officer Wilhelm Heinrich Duhr and his wife Helena. In 1872 he entered the Jesuit order, began the novitiate with Moritz Meschler (1830–1912) at the Friedrichsburg near Münster and continued it in the Netherlands in the Jesuit branch of Exaten Castle . From 1874 he completed his juniorate in Wijnandsrade in the province of Limburg and from 1876 to 1879 he did philosophical studies at Bleijenbeek Castle . Then he was prefect of a division at the Jesuit college Stella Matutina in Feldkirch in Austria for a year . From 1880 to 1883 he was the instructor of Maximilian von Waldburg-Wolfegg-Waldsee at the Andreaskolleg Ordrupshoj near Copenhagen . Then he was from 1883 to 1884 "Socius scriptorum" at Bleijenbeek Castle. During this time he suggested to Anton Maria Anderledy , the designated successor to Superior General Pierre Jean Beckx , the publication of the Monumenta Historica Societatis Iesu series , which was implemented by Luis Martín García from 1892 and appeared from 1894.

In 1884 Duhr went to England and studied theology at Ditton Hall, Lancashire until 1888 . On 18 December 1887 he received in Liverpool the priesthood , on December 19, he will celebrate his first Mass . From 1888 he lived in the then suburb of Lainz of Vienna . He did his third year of probation with Emil von Bülow, took his religious vows in 1890 and carried out historical studies in the Austrian State Archives until 1894 . From 1895 to 1903 he did the preparatory work for his main work in Exaten Palace and carried out archival study trips to Italy, France and to the Archivo General de Simancas in Spain.

In 1897 he was the founder of the communications from the German Province (later communications from the German provinces of the Society of Jesus ), which he headed for over 30 years. The last edition appeared in 1967 under the editing of Adolf Rodewyk .

Duhr moved to Munich in 1903. In 1907 the first volume of his history of the Jesuits in the countries of the German tongue appeared , the other volumes followed in 1913 (in two parts), 1921 and 1923 (in two parts). The work covers the history of the Jesuits up to the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773. It is still one of the standard works in the history of the order.

After the First World War he was also active in charities .

The archivist Clemens Brodkorb created the so-called Duhr library from the estate of Bernhard Duhr , which is located in the archive of the German Province of the Jesuits in Munich. It contains about 6,000 volumes by Jesuit authors up to 1773 and a further 5,000 volumes with Jesuit subjects.
