Andreas Fromm (* 1621 in Plänitz ; † October 16, 1683 in Strahov ) was a German educator, composer, Protestant and Catholic theologian.

Life

Born as the son of the Lutheran pastor von Plänitz Andreas Fromm and his wife Magarethe, the daughter of the Perleberg superintendent Daniel Michaelis, he lost his mother at an early age. Supported by his family, he studied Protestant theology in Frankfurt / Oder and Wittenberg , where he obtained his master's degree. After a short activity at the school in Altdamm , he became cantor at the Marienkirche and professor of music at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin in 1648 . In 1651 he took up the post of provost to St. Petri and consistorial councilor in the Brandenburg residence city of Kölln , after he had previously acquired the academic degree of a licentiate at the University of Rostock . Also in 1651 he married.

Here the Reformed Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg hoped for Fromm's Irish influence in his attempt to end the polemics between the Reformed and Lutheran theologians . This had previously approached the Reformed, especially the court preacher Stosch . After the Berlin Religious Discussion in 1662/63 and the Verses of Tolerance , which the Lutheran clergy were forced to sign, he had doubts about the Elector's religious policy. He expressed this so massively in 1666 that the elector dismissed him from service. Fromm turned to Wittenberg in Electoral Saxony , whose university was dominated by Abraham Calov and Orthodox Lutheranism . Here he worked as a lecturer. When he was appointed superintendent in Altenburg , however, was determined, he preferred taking office with his family to Prague on, converted to the Catholic faith, which he had already impressed on the road, and was on 19 May 1668 the Jesuit Church of Mathias Tanner in the Catholic Church added. He was ordained and became dean . His wife and children moved into an apartment in a monastery building. In 1671 he received a canonical at the cathedral monastery in Leitmeritz . In 1681 he entered the Premonstratensian monastery in Strahov , where he died in 1683.

After converting to the Catholic faith, Fromm polemicized violently against the Protestant denominations . His extensive report drew numerous replies (including from Konrad Tiburtius Rango and Christian Kortholt the Elder ).

In the field of music, the Gospel music Actus musicus de Divite et Lazaro (" From the rich man and poor Lazarus ") , which was written in Stettin, is one of the first German oratorios of importance. In addition, he was particularly fascinated by folk-oriented musical depictions of everyday processes. One can name here the drinking song, the journey into hell, hymns with solo viol and choral fantasies. Fromm is also one of those people - along with Martin Friedrich Seidel and Nikolaus von Zitzewitz - who are believed to be the true authors of the “ Lehnin prophecies ”.
