Mathias Tantau
Mathias Tantau (born September 10, 1882 in Uetersen ; † June 26, 1953 there ) was a German rose breeder .
Life
Mathias Tantau was born in Uetersen in 1882 as the son of a farmer. After attending school, he did an apprenticeship as a tree nursery gardener . Then he worked for a year in Peter Lambert's rose school in Trier . From there he moved to France and Switzerland , where he worked in various rose tree nurseries.
After a few years he returned to Uetersen, where in 1906 he built a tree nursery on a piece of land owned by his father . But his main focus was the cultivation of garden roses and high stem roses. Thanks to good marketing, the number of rose plants produced annually rose to over 250,000 and that of wild roses to over 3 million by 1914 , plus a few thousand standard roses. During this time, the world-famous rose growing company Rosen Tantau emerged . The First World War that followed brought about a big drop in sales, and roses went out of fashion. During this time, Mathias Tantau started growing new rose varieties. The first two new varieties were City Councilor Meyn and Schöne von Holstein , which he introduced in 1919. Other varieties followed, such as Rotelfe , which appeared in 1922.
On August 10, 1925, an unusual natural disaster then occurred in Uetersen. A windpipe of the strength F3 destroyed large parts of the city and the rose fields as well as the existing greenhouses. Since the damage was not covered by insurance, Mathias Tantau was facing ruin . The company could only be rebuilt with great effort, and other new rose varieties followed, such as Johanneszauber , Professor Gnau and Tantau's surprise .
In 1933, together with Wilhelm Kordes and the Uetersen master gardener and later mayor Ernst Ladewig Meyn, he founded the Uetersen rose garden , the oldest and largest rose garden in northern Germany.
Mathias Tantau died on June 26, 1953 in Uetersen. One of his last cultivars was the famous Rose Schweizer Gruß (Red Favorit) , which only came onto the market in 1953 after his death.
His son Mathias Tantau jun. also became a rose breeder and took over the business from his father in 1948.
