After the end of the Second World War he returned to Uetersen from captivity to take over his father's rose growing business ( Rosen Tantau ) there in 1948 . Shortly afterwards, he began changing the growing method, as the trend was towards large-flowered, bright, long-stemmed roses. One of his new breeds was the Konrad Adenauer Rose.
In 1960 Mathias Tantau jun. one of his greatest hits on the market, the salmon-orange Super Star . Other varieties followed, such as fragrance cloud and floribunda rose , both of which came on the market in 1963.
In the meantime the company had grown to around 70 employees who produced three million rose plants annually. The greenhouse area was approx. 2500 m². Mathias Tantau junior has won several international awards for his rose varieties. He was later awarded the Georg Arends Memorial Medal for his services to the rose .
In 1985 he sold the rose growing business to one of his employees and retired a few years later. Mathias Tantau jun. died on March 28, 2006 in Uetersen.
