Mathias Wieman small discotheque is a literary speech plate series , the 1961 / 62 by the record company Ariola Athena was issued. The actor Mathias Wieman speaks German poetry by both classical authors and contemporary authors on a total of five 17 cm long-playing records . Each record is dedicated to a specific topic.

prehistory

During the Second World War , Mathias Wieman spoke German poetry on the radio in the Sunday radio show “Our Treasure Chest”, which gave him the reputation of being a master of the spoken word. At a time when the Germans were particularly dependent on edification through the power of poetry, the audience response was so tremendous that the successful theater and film actor Wieman from then on increasingly devoted himself to the spoken word. Other radio broadcasts, recitation evenings and records with recitations from Wiemans followed.

The little discotheque

Authors and topics

The series opened with sacred poems by Paul Gerhardt , followed by a record of poems and prose "for children and connoisseurs" by Josef Guggenmos , Wilhelm Hey , the Brothers Grimm and Clemens Brentano , followed by poems by August Graf von Platen and Friedrich Rückert . The fourth record includes evening songs by various authors, including Andreas Gryphius and Rainer Maria Rilke . The series closes with ten love songs by unknown poets.

music

Each of the five speech plates from the Mathias Wiemans Little Discotheque series has been lovingly provided with background music that matches the text. So is z. E.g. on the record with poems by Paul Gerhardt, which are, as it were, song texts of sacred songs, the musical accompaniment instrument the organ (the well-known organist Helmut Walcha plays ), while Walter Gerwig improvises soft lute sounds to accompany the evening songs . On the record for children and connoisseurs, the then still unknown young pianist Christoph Eschenbach played the harpsichord and the important music professor Ferdinand Conrad played the recorder, which is probably considered to be the most childish instrument. Music can be heard between two texts, sometimes accompanying the spoken word.

Overall artistic direction

The overall artistic direction of the project of the small discotheque was Gertrud Loos , who started as an assistant for the early recordings of the literature production of Deutsche Grammophon , in cooperation with the speaker Mathias Wieman. The collaboration between Loos and Wieman continued in many ways, including at Deutsche Grammophon . Gertrud Loos also published unpublished material posthumously during Wieman's lifetime.
