Matisyahu Kovalsky (also Matus or Matthias Kovalski ; born January 1, 1880 in Lubcha , Belarus ; † October 7, 1936 in Los Angeles ) was an actor in several Yiddish traveling ensembles in Poland , Romania and the Russian Crimea .

Life

Kovalsky was born in the small Belarusian town of Lubcha as the son of a flax trader. He attended a cheder and later a yeshiva in Vasilishok. At that time he secretly played in a performance of the play Shulamit , which is why he was expelled from school by the rabbi. He then went to the yeshiva in Radon and played theater at the same time. In 1899 he did his military service before turning back to the theater.

Until before the First World War , he also played in performances in the Hebrew language . In 1916, Kovalsky was a co-founder of the Vilna troupe. With a successor group - the Vilnaer - he went to the USA in 1924. He played in this group until 1929 and then toured America with Alexander Asro from 1930 before settling in Los Angeles, where he died in 1936. Kovalsky was married to the actress Pola Walter .
