The Matrassteig , also known as the path through the stone , is a steep, almost alpine hiking trail in the village of Schaltberg in Neustadtl an der Donau im Strudengau in the district of Amstetten in Lower Austria , which leads from the right bank of the Danube to the Brandstetterkogel .

The three-kilometer-long climb, named after Franz Eduard Matras , begins in the village of Tiefenbach (municipality of Ardagger ) at the parking lot at the driveway to the Ing. Leopold Helbich bridge on Greiner Strasse and leads from the Danube ( 233  m above sea level ) initially as steep path to a hill, from where the path is laid out almost horizontally along the entire mountain flank in serpentines.

The path impresses with large boulders under which the path leads and through the opportunities for viewing the Danube valley. The Matrassteig ends with a final ascent at the Brandstetterkogel refuge ( Viktoria-Adelheid refuge ) on a summit of the Brandstetterkogel at 532  m above sea level. A. In a variant, the path leads past the summit stone ( 519  m above sea level ) to the refuge.

The Austrian Tourist Club is the maintainer of the mattress dough and the owner of the refuge. The trail is located in the Lower Austrian landscape protection area Strudengau and the surrounding area and partly in the FFH area Strudengau - Nibelungengau .
