Matteo Nana (born August 25, 1974 in Chiesa in Valmalenco ) is an Italian ski racer. He is three times Italian champion in slalom (1999, 2000) and giant slalom (1999).
biography
Nana achieved his first international success in 1993 at the Junior World Championship in Monte Campione , Italy , where he finished fourth in the Super-G. Almost two years later he made his debut in the World Cup , where, despite his qualities as an all-rounder, he concentrated on the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. In the shadow of Alberto Tomba, Nana quickly developed into one of the best slalom riders in the Italian Ski Association. In the 1996/97 season he was able to place in the top ten in three consecutive races, including the giant slalom on Gran Risa in Alta Badia for the first time in his career on the podium. At the following World Championship he was the second-best Italian in slalom in 15th place, and 18th in giant slalom.
After that, top results in World Cup races were initially missing. Nana was only able to assert itself in the extended top field at major events. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, for example, he was the best Italian 11th in slalom and 15th in giant slalom. At the 1999 World Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek he came in 12th place in the giant slalom.
It was not until the 1999/00 season that he managed to achieve good results again in the World Cup with two placements in the top ten, including a third place in the Vail slalom. After that, his career was overshadowed by numerous serious injuries and personal blows of fate. In the summer of 2000, his fiancée Sara Faldrini was killed while diving in Lake Como .
