Matthäus Delius (* around 1500 near Halberstadt ; † September 30, 1565 in Hamburg ) was a German educator.

Life

Nothing is known about origin and youth. On July 19, 1520 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg as Matheus Dilii de Hermstedt Halberstaden dioc . In Wittenberg he also seems to have acquired the academic degree of a master’s degree (the university documents do not give any information about the time). After he had married in Wittenberg and became a father, he was found in Hamburg on October 9, 1528.

There he met Johannes Bugenhagen , who placed him as a sub-rector at the newly founded school of scholars of the Johanneum . In 1534 Delius became rector adiunctus, that is, he represented the previous founding rector Theophil Freytag , who was no longer able to exercise his office for reasons of age. When Freytag died on December 21, 1537, he became his successor. Under his direction the Hamburg School developed and produced a number of great personalities. The school's reputation reached as far as England .

Delius was married twice; The children of Matthew II (* 1523 in Wittenberg; † August 12, 1544 in Wittenberg, author Libri 4 de arte iocandi) and Johannes are known from their first marriage. From the second marriage of Martinius (* around 1538 † 1582 in Ritzebüttel ) Joachim and Matthäus III. (* after 1544). Delius' family was carried away by the plague , which was rampant in Hamburg , from which he himself died.
