Matthäus Schneider ( November 15, 1877 in Kasendorf - September 29, 1944 in the Dachau concentration camp ) was a German brewery worker and politician ( SPD ). He was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament .

Life

Matthäus Schneider was the son of a day laborer. He attended elementary school in his home village and was a farm servant from the age of 14 to 20. In 1897 he became a brewery worker in the Pertsch brewery in Kulmbach . He joined the trade union movement in 1900 . In 1908 he became chairman of the supervisory board of the Kulmbach consumer association , in 1910 chairman of the SPD von Kulmbach and chairman of the union cartel . In 1911 he was appointed managing director of the Kulmbach Brewery and Mill Workers' Association, a position he held until 1933.

From 1911 he was also involved in local politics in Kulmbach, first in the community council, then in the city council and from 1919 as a city councilor. In the days of the overturning from monarchy to democracy, he headed the local workers ', peasants and soldiers' council . His level-headed manner prevented radicalization, secured supplies and maintained peace in the city. From January 12, 1919 to June 6, 1920 he was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament. From 1920 to 1933 he acted as managing director of the head sheet of the Franconian people's tribune , a Bayreuth SPD newspaper.

After the seizure of power of the NSDAP he lost his functions in the union, the newspaper and local politics. He was arrested in March 1933 and was interned in Kulmbach for several months in so-called “ protective custody ”. After his release, he was under house arrest for a year . In August 1944 he was arrested again as part of the grating action and initially sat in Bayreuth. On August 30, 1944, he was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp, where he died a month later. How he died is not known.

Commemoration

  • A street in Kulmbach has been named after him since May 1945, Matthäus-Schneider-Strasse. The street previously bore the names of two SA men.
  • A stumbling block was laid for him in November 2012 in Kulmbach.
