The Matthäuskirche in Braunschweig is an Evangelical Lutheran church on Herzogin-Elisabeth-Straße in the eastern ring area . The church in the historicist neo-Romanesque style was inaugurated in 1904 and is located between the city ​​park and the Prinzenpark . From 1904 to 1944 it was used by the military as a garrison church. Since 2009 the Matthäuskirche has also been used as a youth church in Braunschweig.

The Aegidienkirche served as a garrison church until December 8, 1811 , after which the military services were relocated to the cathedral . The garrison church was consecrated on December 18, 1904. The steel bells were consecrated on February 26, 1922. The bronze bells from 1904 were melted down during the First World War. During the air raid on 14./15. October 1944 in Braunschweig the roof of the church was damaged and the glass windows destroyed. Looting and damage after the end of the war initially made it impossible to use it. In addition, the building belonged to the state and not to the regional church. The military community had also disbanded.

On April 1, 1966, the Evangelical Lutheran St. Matthew Congregation was founded and the garrison church was renamed St. Matthew Church. After its - purified - restoration, it was consecrated as an Evangelical Lutheran parish church on June 2, 1967. The new organ was put into use on October 27, 1968. A community center was built in the 1970s; the keys were handed over on March 1, 1973. On April 18, 1980, the roof renovation work on the towers was completed and a new weather vane was installed.

On December 5, 2004, the 100th anniversary of the church was celebrated with a festival service. On October 31, 2009 the church was put into use as a youth church in Braunschweig. Since the parish of St. Matthäus merged with St. Pauli, St. Matthäus is also used by the Pauli-Matthäusgemeinde. The neo-Romanesque altarpiece, which was put back on the altar during a renovation with the uncovering of old paintings, is currently placed on the north aisle wall (status 2017).
