Matthes Nowka
Matthes Nowka (Lower Sorbian Mato Nowka , born November 8, 1812 in Kahsel near Spremberg , Niederlausitz , † May 25, 1864 in Luckau ) was a Lower Sorbian pastor and founder of the first Lower Sorbian newspaper Bramborski Serbski Casnik .
Life
Mato Nowka was the son of a Lower Sorbian kossat (housekeeper). After attending grammar school in Cottbus , he studied Protestant theology in Berlin .
Matthes Nowka was pastor in Madlow since 1846. In 1846 he founded the Bramborski Serbski Casnik with the support of German conservative large landowners. He edited the newspaper until 1852, in that year he became pastor in Buckow near Spremberg. In 1861 he gave up the office. Matthes Nowka died on May 25, 1864 in Luckau prison.
