Matthias Auckenthaler

Matthias Auckenthaler (born January 27, 1906 in Mutters , † June 21, 1936 in Leutasch ) was an Austrian alpinist . He made a significant contribution to the further development of climbing in Tyrol.

Life

Auckenthaler, a chimney sweeper by profession, limited his tours (mainly for financial reasons) almost exclusively to the mountains of his closer home, especially the Karwendel , the Wetterstein mountains , the Wilder Kaiser and the Dolomites . He opened up around 20 new routes, many of which are still considered classics today: In 1930 he succeeded in the first ascent of the Lafatscher-northeast intersection . The north face of the Lalidererspitze , which he first climbed in 1932, is considered one of the great rock faces in the Eastern Alps. The direct north face of the Furchetta was also developed by him. Furthermore, he was able to show some spectacular enchaînements (stringing together several climbing routes), free solo ascents and barefoot climbing.

In 1936 Matthias Auckenthaler died after a serious fall on the south face of the Schüsselkarspitze .
