Matthias Cadovius (born October 20, 1621 in Rostock , † November 17, 1679 in Aurich ) was a Lutheran theologian . He was court preacher and from 1657 to 1667 superintendent of the county of Oldenburg .

Life

Cadovius came from Rostock, his father Niklas Cadaw was a citizen of this Hanseatic city . After attending grammar schools in Rostock and Hamburg , he studied theology at the University of Greifswald from 1640 to 1642 . After a stay in Copenhagen he was court master in Königsberg from 1647 and became pastor in Itzehoe in 1650 . From there he went to Delmenhorst as a pastor in 1652 . Just a year later, Count Anton Günther von Oldenburg called him as an early preacher at the Lambertikirche and as court preacher in Oldenburg . Cadovius was the last superintendent to be appointed by Anton Günther. He felt a special human connection with him. 1657 Count Cadovius paid the cost of the promotion for Doctor of Divinity at the University of Rinteln and he appointed him in the same year, although he was at age 36 the youngest Oldenburg pastor, superintendent. In 1661 he made him consistorial advisor and his personal confessor.

Cadovius was thorough, experienced, but devoid of imagination in his church leadership. During the visitations he repeated the dogmatic formulas of the Book of Concords and always delivered the same sermon . He personally took care of individual needs. Above all, Cadovius promoted elementary schools in the parishes and encouraged his parish to send the children to school. After Anton Günther died in his presence on June 29, 1667, Cadovius no longer kept it in Oldenburg. He accepted the call of Princess Dowager Christine Charlotte von Ostfriesland and went to Aurich as general superintendent on May 3, 1670, where he later died.

Sieverdes (1613–1677).
