Matthias Kiesler (born February 22, 1962 in Lüdenscheid ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to Armenia from 2015 to 2019 . Since August 2019 he has been head of the “Promotion of German as a Foreign Language, PASCH partner school initiative” at the Federal Foreign Office

Life

After graduating from high school in 1981 and completing military service in the Bundeswehr in 1982, Kiesler began studying electrical engineering and computer science , which he completed in 1989 as a graduate engineer. He then began his professional career as a sales engineer at Robert Bosch GmbH in 1989 .

In 1991 Kiesler began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after graduating from 1993 to 1995 initially worked in the Foreign Office and then between 1995 and 1998 at the embassy in Pakistan . This was followed by a position as permanent representative of the ambassador in Yemen from 1998 to 2001 and in the Foreign Office between 2001 and 2004, before he worked at the embassy in Egypt from 2004 to 2006 . After working at the embassy in Iraq between 2006 and 2007 , he took on the role of deputy head of a department in the Foreign Office from 2007 to 2009 and then between 2009 and 2010 as head of the branch of the embassy in Sudan in Juba , today's capital of the South Sudan .

After his return, Kiesler initially returned to the Federal Foreign Office in 2010 and from 2010 to 2011 as permanent representative of the ambassador in Libya and subsequently between 2011 and 2015 as permanent representative of the ambassador in Kosovo .

In 2015, Kiesler succeeded the retired Reiner Morell as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Armenia . There he was replaced by Michael Banzhaf in 2019 . Kiesler moved to the Foreign Office in Berlin as head of the “Promotion of German as a Foreign Language, PASCH partner school initiative”.
