Origin and youth

Matthias Konstantin Bendermacher was the son of the Lechenich notary Johann Wilhelm Bendermacher and his wife Christine Reuter from Dirmerzheim . He was born on October 15, 1814 in Lechenich and grew up there in his parents' house on Bonner Strasse. His father Johann Wilhelm Bendermacher was the first officially confirmed notary in Lechenich after the reorganization of the judiciary in Napoleonic times , who received his deed in 1807.

Study time and marriage

After finishing school, Bendermacher attended the building school in Cologne to become an architect . However, he changed the subject and studied law in Heidelberg to support his father in the notary's office. In Heidelberg he met Elisabeth Rath, whom he married on April 8, 1842.

Professional activities

After completing his law degree, he worked as a notary candidate in his father's office in Lechenich from 1840 to 1852. He then worked in several notaries' offices (1852 in Lutzerath , 1857 in Zell an der Mosel ). In 1867 he settled as a notary in Boppard, where he died on May 8, 1880.

Painting and historical research

Bendermacher: Lechenich from the southeast around 1850

The multi-talented lawyer occupied himself with painting and history in his free time, especially with the history of his hometown Lechenich.

His paintings, which were created between 1840 and 1852, show Lechenich and the castle there . The reconstruction of the buildings as in Bendermacher's paintings belonged to the style of romanticizing historicism, with which the viewer should be made aware of the past grandeur of the buildings.

Four paintings still preserved are in the possession of the city of Erftstadt .

Around 1864/65 he wrote a Lechenich town and parish chronicle , which appeared in 1870 as the history of the town and castle of Lechenich in the annals of the historical association for the Lower Rhine . It is the oldest historical representation of Lechenich.

Not only in Lechenich, but also in Boppard, he dealt with local history, especially archeology. In 1871, Bendermacher's treatises on early Christian and Franconian tombs in Boppard appeared in the yearbooks of the Society of Friends of Antiquity .
