Matthias Lohre (* 1976 ) is a German journalist and publicist . He lives in Berlin .

Life

After completing his civil service , Lohre studied Medieval and Modern History, Anglo-American History and English Studies at the University of Cologne from autumn 1996 . He completed his studies in the summer of 2001 with a master's degree. He then completed a three-month internship at the German-Jewish weekly newspaper Aufbau in New York City . He was an eyewitness to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

From April 2002 to September 2003 Lohre completed the 17th editorial department at the Berlin School of Journalism .

From 2005 to 2014 he worked as an editor for the daily newspaper in Berlin. His main thematic focuses were German party politics and contemporary history. His column "Men" appeared in the newspaper between 2009 and 2013, followed by the column "Conservative" until the end of 2014.

As part of the German-Asian program of the International Journalist Program (IJP), Lohre received a work grant in 2009. He then toured China and Hong Kong for two months.

The column topic “Men” led to the creation of his popular non-fiction books “Milde Kerle” and “Der Film-Verführer” (both 2013). They deal with dealing with today's gender roles .

In March 2016 his third non-fiction book “The legacy of the war grandchildren” was published, which was placed on the SPIEGEL bestseller list for two weeks. In it Lohre describes his origins as the child of two war children and uses his example to describe the long-term consequences of traumatic experiences of war children, their effects on war grandchildren and possible solutions.

His non-fiction book "The victim is the new hero", published in September 2019, also deals with the consequences of misunderstood distress. The focus is on the question: How do suppressed trauma cause people worldwide to feel fearful, endangered and unwanted? According to Lohre, our society, which rewards competition, distrust and isolation, produces millions of victim attitudes. Those who have received little or no attention as a child learn to understand the world as a threatening place and to understand themselves as inadequate. For those traumatized in this way, the real cause of their fears would usually remain hidden. Instead, they sought support and confirmation from leaders, ideologies or black-and-white thinking, which, however, only strengthened their victim attitude. Lohre explains his thesis using Donald Trump's example , the Brexit campaign , the AfD , the Nazi era and the GDR . He also describes ways out of the victim role.
