Matthias Preusser
Matthias Preusser (born October 29, 1976 in Mödling ) is an Austrian oncologist and university professor for internal oncology, as well as head of the clinical department for oncology at the Medical University of Vienna . He is known for his work on neuro-oncology , molecular therapy targets, biomarkers, and cancer immunotherapy.
Life
Matthias Preusser studied medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna , received his doctorate in 2003 and is a specialist in internal medicine , hematology and oncology. In 2009 he completed his habilitation in experimental oncology (Thesis: Analysis of Biomarkers in Brain Tumors ) and in 2016 in Internal Medicine (Thesis: Personalized therapy of cancer ). Preusser is the coordinator of the brain tumor unit of the Comprehensive Cancer Center - Central Nervous System (CCC-CNS). From 2009 onwards, he spent time abroad at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center , New York. On October 1, 2018, Preusser was appointed University Professor of Internal Oncology and, on November 1, 2018, Head of the Clinical Department of Oncology at the Medical University of Vienna. In September 2019 Preusser was elected President of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO) 2021/22.
Scientific contribution
Preusser's scientific work deals with the identification of molecular changes with prognostic and therapeutic relevance in brain tumors. His work on the importance of the MGMT gene ( O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase ), the IDH gene ( glioblastoma ) and the BRAF gene ( Raf ) in gliomas and brain metastases, as well as the immune phenotype and the role of PD-L1 are often cited. He is co-author of the currently valid WHO classification of brain tumors, which is considered an internationally recognized standard reference. The oncologist is leading several clinical studies on cancer immunotherapy and an international, randomized therapy study on high-grade meningiomas .
