The painting Rural Festival by Matthias Scheits

Matthias Scheits , also Scheitz or Scheutz, (* around 1625 to 1630 in Hamburg ; † around 1700 there ) was a German painter , draftsman and etcher .

Live and act

Matthias Scheits probably received training in Hamburg and then went to Haarlem to learn from Philips Wouwerman . Another trip to the Netherlands and Antwerp is documented for 1669. Scheitz acquired extensive knowledge of the local painting styles. Handwritten comments in the Schilder-Boek Karel von Manders , which could be assigned to Scheitz, but are no longer available, attest to this . Probably shortly after Scheitz acquired Hamburg citizenship in 1651 , he married in Hamburg. The painter and his wife had several children, including Andreas Scheits .

Scheits most likely lived and worked in Hamburg since 1651, where he died around 1700.

Works and appreciation

Scheits is particularly known for numerous illustrations that are contained in a picture Bible published by Von Stern'schen Druckerei in 1672 . The imagery is very reminiscent of similar motifs from Italy, but is not very typical of Scheit's oeuvre. The artist captured scenes from rural life that are reminiscent of David Teniers and Adriaen van Ostade , but are less crude. In addition, unpretentious pictures have been preserved that show pictures of walkers and day trippers. In addition, he created small paintings with battle scenes, which, due to their design, appear idiosyncratic and sketchy. Scheits could have got the inspiration for this from Philips Wouwerman. Scheits also created portraits. Numerous pictures by the painter can be seen today in the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

Alfred Lichtwark described Scheitz in a monograph in 1899 as the most important German painter of his time. From today's perspective, this assessment is astonishing and can probably be traced back to Lichtwark's commitment to cultural reform.

Since 1929 the Matthias-Scheits-Weg in Barmbek-Nord has borne the name of the painter associated with Hamburg.
