Matthias Schurig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthias Schurig (* between 1640 and 1650 in Radeberg ; † December 24, 1697 in Stettin ) was a Saxon organ builder .

Act

For the year 1678 it is documented that the council of Kamenz strove to have a larger organ built on the west choir of the main church St. Marien . Various master organ builders were asked to submit their plans. The council last contacted the organ builder Matthias Schurig in 1679. Nothing is known about the preliminary negotiations, but Schurig was awarded the contract, possibly - he was still young - recommended an organ built in Meissen . However, it is not certain whether he actually built his own works before 1679.

From 1679 to 1682 he built the organ in the main church in Kamenz. The Saxon coat of arms with two coat of arms lions on the back positive of the Kamenz organ was probably not made by Schurig until 1685. There are probably two "clean pencil drawings" that should be in the files. The files show that the "cut art work in wood" was carried out by George Hönniger . “To fix the coat of arms and the lions with iron and 33 screws on the Rückpositiv, 2 Rhtlr were paid . 3 gr. “In 1891 the neo-Gothic Walcker organ was installed in the main church and the Schurig organ replaced, only one stop - the Aeoline 8 ′ (Fugara 8 ′) - was added to the Mende organ of the St. Annen (Kamenz) and the coat of arms of Electoral Saxony with the two lions found a new place on the organ gallery of the monastery church.

Matthias Schurig is listed as an "important Saxon master with a cross-border sphere of activity and an exceptionally imaginative construction method". No organs from Schurig have survived.
