The Matthias Chapel is located in the Wickrathhahn district in Mönchengladbach ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), Priorshof 15.

The building was built at the end of the 19th century. It was entered under No. P 015 on December 15, 1987 in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach .

location

The wayside shrine is located in the field corridor northwest of the priority court and west of the corridor "An der Priorhecke" on the way to Baum and Mennrath .

architecture

It is a freestanding shrine, built of dark red bricks under a covered up in modern Zinkstehfalzdeckung gable roof . Buttress-like building corners with recessed, very narrow wall surfaces on the eaves sides characterize the shrine built on a rectangular base.

A flat base, which ends with molded bricks as a coved cornice , and a circumferential cornice formed from a row of molded stones , structure the wall structure. The pointing East Front tapers under an upset ogive step-like and takes in a deep niche, a sandstone relief on which the Hl. Matthias represents and is locked behind a glazed, modern sash frame made of metal. A white marble slab with the inscription : H. Apostle Mathias, please for us! Erected by the St. Mathias Brotherhood in 1882.

In front of the wayside shrine is a semicircular wall arch made of bricks, which supports a modern, wrought-iron grille and protects a bedding plant . Until 2016 there were three mighty linden trees around the wayside shrine and a park bench, which was a popular resting place for hikers and cyclists.

The linden trees were felled in August 2016. The responsible Matthias Brotherhood Rheindahlen has not commented on this.
