Matti Klinge (born August 31, 1936 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish historian.

The father Paul Klinge had a German-Baltic background and lived in St. Petersburg until 1919. The family settled in Helsingfors . Klinge studied at the University of Helsinki and was named the best master's student in 1960. In 1967 he received his doctorate. From 1966 to 1969 he worked as a curator at the Mannerheim Museum. He was visiting professor at the University of Paris from 1970 to 1972. Then he held the Swedish professorship for history at the University of Helsinki from 1976 to 2001 and was temporarily rector there. He dealt with the Swedish and Russian relations of Finland in the middle position between " Bernadotte and Lenin" (1975), with Zacharias Topelius and Johan Ludvig Runeberg . Klinge is one of the most prominent Finnish historians, especially in the history of ideas, and was involved in the development of the House of European History in Brussels. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Finnish National Biography, President of the Finnish Society for the Study of the Eighteenth Century and the Friends of Marcel Proust .

He is a member of the Haut Conseil de l'Histoire Européenne in Paris, is a member of the Royal Academy of Literature and History in Stockholm and Knight of the Legion of Honor , and since 2015 an officer of the Legion of Honor.

Klinge holds honorary doctorates from the University of Greifswald (2006) and the University of Uppsala (1989).
