Matti Oehl

Matti Oehl (* 1990 in Hoyerswerda ) is a German jazz musician ( alto saxophone , composition ).

Live and act

Oehl received his first musical lessons at the age of six, followed by classical training on the clarinet . In his father's band he had his first contact with jazz and improvisation . He has been playing the saxophone since the age of 14, and at 17 he made the decision to study music. From 2009 he studied first at the Dresden University of Music with Finn Wiesner , from 2010 then at the Leipzig University of Music with Johannes Enders and Michael Wollny .

His first band, the Quartet No. 2 . Since 2012 he has played in the collaborative quartet Trio.Diktion with Antonia Hausmann , Philip Frischkorn and Jakob Petzl, which released its second album Serenade in 2017 . Johannes Enders, Robert Lucaciu and Tom Friedrich play in his own quartet ; his album Ornament was released in 2016 on Unit Records . Oehl also composes for the Aurora Octet around Carl Wittig, of which he is also a member. He is also a member of Philipp Rumsch's ensemble .

Prizes and awards

Oehl was awarded the Quartet No. 2 honored at the Federal Youth Meeting 2009. With Trio.Diktion he received the Leipzig Young Talent Award in 2014 and the second prize at the Young Munich Jazz Award in 2016 .
