The house at Mauerstraße 9 is a building in Darmstadt .

History and description

The residential building at Mauerstraße 9 was built around 1843. Stylistically, the building belongs to the Biedermeier period . The builder was the master carpenter Georg Friedrich Mahr from Darmstadt.

The unpretentious Biedermeier country house type comes from the beginning of the Martinsviertel development. The formerly free-standing house has two and a half floors . The large property was later built over with further rental houses by the client himself. The axially symmetrical cubic structure with a protruding roof is characterized by economical ornamentation . The rectangular lattice windows sit in sharp-edged wall surfaces. The upper floor is characterized by a simple canopy motif. All windows - with the exception of the semicircular window in the gable - have cast-iron balustrades . The shutters, which originally emphasized the rural character - which also served as a decorative form for this simple design - are largely missing today.

One of the two richly crafted garden sheds with half-timbering from the 1860s has been preserved in the courtyard . The compartments are artfully lined, the gable field and the eaves boards are decorated with sawn ornamentation.

Monument protection

The house is a typical example of Biedermeier architecture in Darmstadt. For architectural, architectural and urban historical reasons, the building is a listed building .
