Maurice Burrus

Maurice Burrus (born March 8, 1882 in Dambach-la-Ville , † December 5, 1959 in Lausanne ) was an Alsatian businessman, politician and philatelist .

Life

Burrus came from a rich family of tobacco manufacturers from Alsace. After completing his studies, he took over the management of the family business. Later he was a member of the French parliament.

He had been interested in postage stamps since the age of 7 and put together one of the largest general collections ever. In the 1920s he bought about a quarter of the Ferrary collection and in 1934 also large parts of Arthur Hind's collection , including the one-off Bordeaux cover .

He was also interested in history and supported excavations in Provence .

  • 1968 Postage stamp of the Principality of Liechtenstein ( Michel -Nr. 505) with a portrait of him, as a stamp from the sentence with the name "Pioneers of Philately".
