Maurice Hemelsoet

Maurice Constant Maria Hemelsoet (born March 8, 1875 in Ghent ; † December 29, 1943 ibid) was a Belgian rower who came second in the 1900 Olympic Games and won seven European Championships.

Athletic career

Maurice Hemelsoet rowed for the Koninklijke Roeivereniging Club Gent . This club placed eighth several times , who represented Belgium at the European Championships . From 1897 to 1910 the Belgian eight won the title at the European championships twelve times, the French boat only won in 1905 and 1909. Maurice Hemelsoet was in the victorious boat in 1897 , 1899 , 1900 and 1901 . In the coxed four Hemelsoet won of 1898 bis 1900 three European titles.

At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 , a total of five boats competed in the eight, including the eight from Ghent. Since the French boat gave up in the run, all boats that reached the finish in the run also reached the final. In the final, the boat from the Vesper Boat Club from Philadelphia won, with the eighth from Ghent finishing second, six seconds behind.
