Maurice Maréchal (born October 3, 1892 in Dijon ; died April 19, 1964 in Paris ) was a French cellist .

Life

Maurice Maréchal attended the music school in Dijon and from 1905 to 1911 the Paris Conservatory . In 1912 he was drafted and served in the First World War . Maréchal kept a diary . His comrades made a cello for him out of ammunition boxes, the instrument is now in the musical instrument museum of the Conservatoire de Paris. After the war he began a solo career that also took him to North and South America. During the German occupation in World War II , he refused to appear in public. In 1942 he became a teacher at the Conservatory and remained so until his death in 1964.

In 1922 he performed the sonata for violin and violoncello by Maurice Ravel with Hélène Jourdan-Morhange . The Sonata for cello and piano by Simon Laks he played in 1932 with Vlado Perlemuter . He also arranged for the world premiere of works by André Caplet , Lucien Durosoir , Alexandre Tansman and Joseph Ropartz .

In 1931 he played the Concerto pour violoncelle et orchester by Arthur Honegger . He transcribed various pieces, including the Saudades do Brazil , by Darius Milhaud , as well as Isaac Albéniz 's interlude from Pepita Jiménez and the tango from Suite España .

Washington Castro was one of his students . A Concours International Maurice Maréchal in memory of his name was only awarded in 1972.

Maréchal was an officer of the Legion of Honor and holder of the Croix de guerre .
