Maurice Neligan

Maurice Neligan (born 1937 in Booterstown , County Dublin , † October 8, 2010 in Dublin ) was an Irish heart surgeon .

Maurice Neligan received his MD in 1962 from University College Dublin . From 1971 to 2009 he worked at the Mater Hospital in Dublin, from 1974 to 2002 at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin . He was one of the co-founders of the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin.

Neligan performed the first open heart surgery in 1974. He became the first Irish medical professional to have a coronary bypass transplant in 1975 and Ireland's first heart transplant in 1985. In total, he performed approximately 15,000 heart operations.

From 2002 until his death, Neligan wrote a weekly health column for The Irish Times . He died unexpectedly in October 2010 at the age of 73 in Dublin.
