Maurice Frederick Strong , PC , CC , OM , FRSC (born April 29, 1929 in Oak Lake , Manitoba , † November 27, 2015 in Ottawa , Ontario ) was a Canadian entrepreneur and Secretary of State .

In the early 1970s he was Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment before becoming the first Director General of the United Nations Environment Program in 1972 . He then moved into the private sector and was named CEO of Petro-Canada , where he worked from 1976 to 1978. He then headed the Ontario Hydro power company and American Water Development Incorporated .

Strong was an honorary professor at Peking University and honorary chairman of its environmental foundation, as well as chairing the advisory board of the Institute for Research and Safety and Sustainability for Northeast Asia. Strong was seen as a leading figure in the international environmental movement. He was President of the United Nations Council for the University for Peace from 1998 to 2006.
