Maury Troy Travis

Maury Troy Travis (born October 25, 1965 in St. Louis , Missouri , † June 10, 2002 in Clayton , Missouri) was an American serial killer .

Series of murders, arrests and suicide

Restaurant worker Maury Travis murdered at least 12 prostitutes at his Ferguson , Missouri home between 2000 and 2002 and dumped the bodies in the St. Louis area. After he had sent an anonymous letter to the daily newspaper "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" on May 21, 2002 with the location of a corpse marked, he was arrested on June 7, 2002. He had enclosed a map of St. Louis with the letter, which he had downloaded from Expedia.com and printed out. Investigators found that the map had only been downloaded from a single computer in the past few months when its owner, Maury Travis, could be determined. During the subsequent house search, traces of blood from the victims and video tapes on which he had filmed himself during the crimes were found in the cellar.

Twelve murders of prostitutes could be proven, he is suspected to have killed at least five other women. Before the first conviction, Travis hanged himself on June 10, 2002 in his prison cell in the St. Louis County Jail.
