The Ziegelsdorf mausoleum is the burial place of Baron Hans Georg Friedrich Werner von Seebach. In order to complete the building in the event of premature death and to take care of its final resting place , he bequeathed 300,000 marks in his will to the Gotha racing club for Central Germany , of which the enthusiastic equestrian was a member. In 1897, two years after his death, the mausoleum was completed.

In 1992 the Free State of Bavaria finally initiated the most necessary renovation measures on the natural stone facade and the roof of the monument. In addition, the interior was cordoned off.

architecture

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is designed as a neo-Romanesque central building and has a cross-shaped floor plan. The upper end of the approximately 17-meter-high structure is formed by a dome , which is crowned by an eight-sided, pavilion-like lantern . Circumferential round arched blind arcades form the end of the facade . On the east and west side triangular gables are crowned by pinnacles , on the south side there is an apse and on the north side the entrance with a wide flight of stairs leading into a porch. This is a front supported by three arches on cushion capitals and round, red-brown granite columns balconies decorated. The upper end is a gable decorated with tendrils, which mentions 1897 as the year of completion. In the interior behind three wooden doors, in the middle under the dome, is the stone sarcophagus with a black marble lid and the inscription “Hier rests in Frieden / Hans Georg Friedrich / Werner von Seebach / geb. May 2, 1851 / d. Nov. 14, 1895 ”. In the windowless apse behind it is a life-size marble statue of Christ on a high plinth, who spreads his arms over the sarcophagus in a blessing. The statue is the work of the Coburg sculptor August Sommer . Windows on both sides, divided by pillars, with tracery and lead-glazed painted panes provide natural lighting. The interior is decorated with neo-Romanesque paintings.

Around the dome opening is the inscription from the Bible “Blessed are the pure of heart, because they will see God, blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called God's children / Matt. 5.8. ".
