The mausoleum of the Mertés family is a mausoleum in Bad Breisig , a spa town in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate , which is located in the city's former cemetery on Koblenzer Straße. The mausoleum has been a protected cultural monument since 1989 .

history

In 1911/12, the Cologne hat manufacturer Albert Mertés - he owned two hat shops in Schildergasse in Cologne - built the mausoleum on the old cemetery of Breisig, which existed until 1966. His daughter Mimi Mertés, who died early, was first buried in the mausoleum. Albert Mertés, who was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Bad Breisig in 1921 , died in Berlin in 1924. His final resting place was in the mausoleum next to his daughter Mimi, Albert Mertés, his son Albert Peter and his grandson Walter. A street in Bad Breisig is named after Albert Mertés.

The central building with dome was built in 1911/12 according to plans by the architect Oscar Schütz from Cologne . The mausoleum has a round slate roof with a glass dome and is inspired by Art Nouveau . The cladding of the lower wall surfaces and the floor were made of marble . The four sarcophagi of the buried are carved out of tuff .
