The Mauzenstein (2007)

The Mauzenstein is a red sandstone rock designated as a natural monument on the border between the Baden-Württemberg cities of Gaggenau ( Rastatt district ) and Bad Herrenalb ( Calw district ) in the northern Black Forest . It is located not far from the amber , at 704.8  m above sea level. NHN am Mauzenberg south of the saddle to the north located Tannschachberg . Stratigraphically , it belongs to the upper scree horizon (smc 2) of the Middle Buntsandstein . The layering structure of the sedimentary rock can be seen on the sides .

The historic Michelbach – Moosbronn – Bernbach border path , which follows the former border between the states of Baden and Württemberg , passes the Mauzenstein. The prominent boulder served as a boundary stone and has cross-shaped boundary markings. A sign informs about speculations that the rock served the astral cult (worship of the stars) in the early days , which alludes to eroded circular structures in the rock surface, which various local historians believed were man-made. However, the Baden regional geologist Walter Hasemann described them, similar to the spherical phenomena on the nearby amber rock, as large spheres within a spherical horizon spread in the main red sandstone and thus as natural concretions .
